KANKOU album out and getting great reviews, Mark Mulholland's "The Devil on the Stairs" re-released

"Kuma", the debut album of the young Malian singer Kankou Kouyate, in collaboration with Scottish musician and producer Mark Mulholland and French electronic artist Olaf Hund, was released by Cannery Row Records on December 6th 2019, to coincide with their performance at Africolor, the prestigious French festival of African music. The album has been receiving fantastic reviews, being chosen as the best album of the year by the Danish newspaper Globalnyt, debut album of the year by the British magazine rockshot, reaching no 14 in the World Music Charts Europe and receiving 4 star reviews in the Financial Times, Songlines, Rock'n'Reel and many other publications.

Cannery Row Records is pleased to re-issue Scottish singer-songwriter Mark Mulholland’s first solo album, “The Devil on the Stairs”, a double album consisting of one volume of studio tracks and a second disc recorded live at a concert in 2005 in London's legendary 12 Bar Club (which sadly since fell victim to “redevelopment”). Originally released by the UK label Troubadour, and produced by the Australian engineer Dugald Jayes, “The Devil on the Stairs" showcases Mark's songwriting, guitar playing and singing, covering a variety of styles including folk, blues and rock. As the American guitarist and singer Bill Hangley Jr., said, “When I play his songs, I find out quickly who among my listeners knows what it’s like to fall in love, or fall apart, or dream a drunken dream, or smile at a sunrise from the back of a truck. Those people are the ones who say, “Wow, what a great song.”

KANKOU - 1st single to be released in September, Mark Mulholland "The Cactus and the Dragon" vinyl release

Cannery Row is proud to announce that we are working on a new project with the young Malian singer Kankou Kouyate. Kankou comes from one of the most respected musical families of Mali, and in the past has worked with many of the great Malian musicians, including her uncle Bassékou Kouyate, Cheick Tidiane Seck, Habib Koité and Toumani Diabate, on whose forthcoming album she sang lead vocals on several songs, and has also collaborated with international stars Damon Albarn, Brian Eno and Nick Zinner. Kankou has been working for the last couple of years with Scottish musician and producer Mark Mulholland, and they have written and recorded an album of original songs, with electronic elements provided by Parisian musician Olaf Hund. Ranging from acoustic folk and hypnotic blues to catchy pop and psychedelic rock, their songs blend African and western influences in a fresh and innovative style, and the blend of electronic beats, electric and acoustic guitar and Kankou's sublime voice and charisma captivate the audience at every performance.

The first single, "Obadya", will be released in September, with the album to follow in the autumn. For more info, visit

Mark Mulholland's 2010 album "The Cactus and the Dragon" will be released in 2019 in vinyl format for the first time. Among the many favourable reviews it garnered at the CD release, here's one from Drowned in Sound: "The Cactus and the Dragon, with its shades of dark green and brown and reeking of stale coffee from a roadside diner, is a seriously impressive piece of work.” (8 stars from 10)

Happy New Year !!!!!

Forthcoming album by Frankétienne and Mark Mulholland

« Chaophonies » is the fruit of a collaboration between the Haitian poet, painter, novelist, playwright and actor Frankétienne and the Scottish musician Mark Mulholland combining spoken word and music. Theatrical readings by Frankétienne of extracts from his book of poetry « Rapjazz, Journal d'un Paria » blend with original music composed and performed by Mark Mulholland.

Frankétienne is one of the foremost literary figures in the Caribbean, with a career that spans half a century, since he founded the « Spiral » movement in the 1960s. Unlike many of his contemporaries who left Haiti during the dictatorial regime of the Duvaliers, Frankétienne has always remained in Port-au-Prince, where he founded and ran a school while continuing his literary activities. "Chaophonies" is a tortured hymn to Port-au-Prince, his « schizophonic » hometown, with all its chaos and contradictions, its beauty and violence, its sounds and smells, its people.

Mark Mulholland is a guitarist, singer and songwriter from Glasgow, who has made numerous albums both solo and with bands including Two Dollar Bash, with whom he toured extensively around Europe and North America. After years of splitting his time between Berlin, Paris and other European cities, Mark moved to Haiti in 2010, where he has been working on youth music projects in a cultural centre in Port-au-Prince, as well as collaborating with established Haitian artists and continuing his musical activities in Europe during regular trips back there.

Soon after his arrival in Port-au-Prince, Mark met Frankétienne, leading to a series of collabborations, including a guest appearance by Frankétienne on « Les Belles Promesses », a track on the album that Mark released in 2012 with fellow Scot Craig Ward, « Waiting for the Storm », which received superlative reviews in the British press, with the title featuring Frankétienne being singled out by The Telegraph as being « a remarkable and bold collaboration », and by the web magazine 6 Days from Tomorrow as « a strange and beautiful créole/celtic drama »

In their new recording, « Chaophonies de Port-au-Prince », Frankétienne's captivating and dramatic readings and occasional créole songs, are combined with settings drawn from different musical backgrounds – rock, blues, Celtic folk, musette…masterfully played by Mark Mulholland and the other musicians who appear on the album : Haitian percussionist Zikiki, Belgian double bassist Hannes d’Hoine and violinist Buni Lenski, French accordionist Olaf Hund and Scottish cellist Nicola Geddes.

The project will be performed at the Maison de la Poésie in Paris on March 15th 2014, and at other venues to be confirmed.

Eamonn Dowd and the Racketeers, from Dublin, have just finished recording a great new album which will be released on Cannery Row in October. The album was recorded by Paul Thomas, who is best known for his work with Thin Lizzy and early U2. Hot Press magazine said of The Racketeers’ last album, “Exit Hellsville”, "A damn fine example of gravel-voiced country rock.....these songs are full of unaffected, unrefined humanity, a kind of world-weary, warts 'n' all honesty that's getting rarer in music....there is something raw and real about The Racketeers that's easy to love." A CD launch gig is being organised - we will post details as soon as we have them.
